Military leadership meeting

Military leadership meeting after the 1966 coup, Nigeria.

This photograph captures a significant moment in Nigerian political history, shortly after the military coup of January 1966 that ended the country’s First Republic.

Among those present is Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, who became Nigeria’s first military Head of State on January 16, 1966 following the coup. Also visible is Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Gowon, who would later become Head of State after the counter-coup of July 1966.

The scene appears to show a high-level meeting of military officers during the early days of military rule, a period that marked a profound turning point in Nigeria’s political history as the armed forces assumed control of the government.

This transition initiated a long era of military influence in Nigerian politics that would shape the country for decades.
