The Emir of Kano

The Emir of Kano with Sheikh Bashir
Nigeria
Nigeria › Kano
c. 1944

This photograph from around 1944 shows the Emir of Kano seated beside Sheikh Bashir, associated with the Kano Law School in Kano.

Both men are dressed in traditional attire with turbans, reflecting the cultural and religious traditions of northern Nigeria. Sheikh Bashir holds an open book, suggesting a moment of discussion or teaching. Islamic scholarship has long played a central role in Kano’s intellectual life, where Quranic education and legal studies were fundamental institutions of society.

For centuries, the Emirate of Kano was one of the most influential political and religious centers in the Sokoto Caliphate, and even during the British colonial period traditional rulers like the Emir continued to hold important authority within the system of indirect rule.

The image comes from the E. H. Duckworth Photograph Collection and offers a glimpse into the intellectual and cultural life of northern Nigeria in the mid-twentieth century. 📷
