This early photograph from 1912 shows a hilltop view of the town of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, just off the coast of Southern California. The calm bay is dotted with numerous anchored boats while a larger vessel approaches the small pier extending into the water.

Along the sandy shoreline stand several houses and hotels, reflecting the early growth of Avalon as a popular seaside resort destination. In the foreground a larger dock structure can be seen, while people are visible walking and gathering on the beach.

The dry foothills surrounding the bay form the striking natural landscape that still characterizes Avalon today.
