Snowball Fight

Snowball Fight in Kerrville (1915)
United States
United States › Texas › Kerr County › Kerrville

This remarkable photograph captures an unexpected winter scene in Kerrville, Texas, in March 1915, where a group of boys can be seen enjoying a lively snowball fight in front of a modest wooden house. Snow-covered ground and bare trees reveal just how unusual the weather must have been for the Texas Hill Country.

The image holds a special historical detail: the house in the background, with the staircase visible at the center, was the location of the C. C. Butt grocery store, the small family business that would later grow into the famous H-E-B grocery chain, today one of the largest and most beloved supermarket companies in the United States.

One of the boys in the photo — the one standing closest to the gate — is G. Leland Richeson, who holds an interesting place in the company’s early history as the very first employee of the H-E-B grocery stores. As was common for small-town businesses at the time, the Butt family both operated the grocery store on the ground floor and lived upstairs.

What began in this simple house would eventually grow into a company generating tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue, making this humble scene a small but fascinating chapter in Texas commercial history.
