Panaro River
Three schoolchildren glide across the Panaro River in Guiglia, Italy, on a makeshift chairlift used for their daily trip to school in 1959. With the Guiglia Bridge destroyed during WWII, this simple rope-and-pulley lift became the only link between the town and the countryside on the opposite bank, a precarious commute the children undertook each day to reach their classroom.
