Sylvan Goldman and the First Shopping Cart

Sylvan Goldman and the First Shopping Cart – 1960

This historic photograph, taken in Oklahoma City in 1960, shows Sylvan Goldman, the inventor of the modern shopping cart, proudly posing with one of his creations outside a Humpty Dumpty grocery store. Although this image dates from 1960, the revolutionary debut of the shopping cart happened on June 4, 1937, right here in Oklahoma.

Goldman, then owner of the Humpty Dumpty chain, invented the cart to help customers carry more groceries, stay longer in stores, and ultimately buy more. What seems ordinary today was met with skepticism at first—until clever marketing and convenience turned it into an essential part of the shopping experience.

This photo captures the proud legacy of a small idea that changed retail forever.
