Gandhi as a law student

circa 1890

This rare photograph shows a young Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, later known as Mahatma Gandhi, during his formative years as a law student in London. Captured around 1890, it reveals not the iconic figure of peace in homespun cloth—but a shy, determined youth, freshly arrived from India, navigating a new world.

At just 18 years old, Gandhi came to London to study at Inner Temple, one of the four Inns of Court. Here, he adopted a Western lifestyle, studied British law, and began the quiet evolution of a mind that would one day challenge an empire—not with weapons, but with truth and nonviolence.

🕊️ “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”
