St John’s Gate

circa 1870

This atmospheric view of St John’s Gate in Clerkenwell, taken around 1870, captures one of the most iconic medieval structures surviving in central London. Built in 1504 as the entrance to the priory of the Knights of St John, the gate later served as everything from a printing house and coffee tavern to the home of the famous Gentleman’s Magazine.

By the time this photograph was taken, horse-drawn carriages still rolled through the cobbled arch, and market sellers lingered nearby — as seen in the man resting with a cart in the foreground. The scene offers a striking juxtaposition of medieval stonework and bustling Victorian life.

St John’s Gate is now the headquarters of the Museum of the Order of St John, preserving the legacy of one of the most fascinating knightly orders in history.
