Wedding of Festus Gabriel Martins and Beatrice Ajayi Elliott
Nigeria
Nigeria › Lagos › Lagos Island
1937

This photograph shows Festus Gabriel Martins and Beatrice Ajayi Elliott on their wedding day in 1937. After their marriage ceremony at the Cathedral Church of Christ, the couple posed for this portrait at their residence at 5 Bucknor Street on Lagos Island.

Festus Gabriel Martins (1903–1972) was the fourth son of Frederick Germano Martins, a prominent Lagos family descended from the community of Afro-Brazilian returnees who settled in the city during the nineteenth century after returning from Brazil.

Earlier generations of the Martins family played a notable role in the development of Lagos Island. Festus’s ancestors, including Antonio Ojo Martins and Pedro Pancho Martins, were traders who traveled between West Africa and Brazil. During voyages in the 1840s they reportedly brought back breadfruit seedlings, planting them in a long row on their estate. Over time the distinctive trees gave their name to Breadfruit Street, where some of the original trees are said to survive today near St. Paul's Anglican Church.

The Martins family residence stood on Bucknor Street, a road that disappeared during the large urban redevelopment programme launched in 1957 by the Lagos Executive Development Board. As part of the project, several historic streets—including Martins Street, Breadfruit Street, McEwen Street and Seriki Street—were demolished to modernize the crowded colonial district.

Although the redevelopment widened streets and opened new urban spaces, parts of the housing plan were never completed. Some of the cleared land later became the busy Oluwole Market, while displaced residents were relocated to areas such as Surulere, which developed into one of the city’s major residential districts in the mid-twentieth century.

Today, Martins Street runs through what was once part of the Martins family estate, connecting Broad Street with Nnamdi Azikiwe Street (formerly Victoria Street).

More than a wedding portrait, this 1937 photograph reflects the rich Afro-Brazilian heritage of Lagos, the social life of colonial Lagos Island, and the dramatic urban transformation that reshaped the city during the twentieth century.
