Mobile County Courthouse
Mobile County Courthouse — Mobile, Alabama, ca. 1925
This impressive building was the Mobile County Courthouse and city jail, photographed around 1925 in downtown Mobile, Alabama. Designed by local architect Rudolf Benz, the structure was built in the Neoclassical style, featuring grand columns, ornate pediments, domed towers, and decorative sculptures inspired by classical Roman figures.
When it opened in 1889, the courthouse quickly became one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city. Its monumental architecture reflected the civic pride and prosperity of Mobile during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the port city was a major commercial gateway on the Gulf Coast.
The building, however, did not escape the powerful storms that frequently strike the region. Hurricanes in 1906 and 1916 caused serious damage to parts of the statuary and the clock tower. Despite repairs, the structure was eventually demolished in the 1950s and replaced with an Art Deco–style courthouse, which itself was later replaced in 2007 by the current county courthouse building.
Historic photographs like this remind us how dramatically cities can change over time, and how many remarkable buildings disappear before new generations ever see them.
