Government Street
Mobile, Alabama — Government Street, 1904
A streetcar travels east along Government Street toward the Mobile River in this photograph taken in 1904 by amateur photographer and railroad mechanic S. Marion Coffin. At the beginning of the 20th century, streetcars were transforming urban mobility in many American cities, allowing residents to move easily between neighborhoods, the commercial center, and the busy port.
On the right side of the image rise the distinctive towers of the Mobile County Courthouse, designed by local architect Rudolf Benz and completed in 1889. The imposing building became one of the architectural landmarks of the city until it was demolished and replaced in 1958.
The scene captures a moment of transition: horse-drawn vehicles still share the street with the new electric streetcar, workers are busy along the roadway, and telegraph and power lines stretch across the street—signs of a city rapidly modernizing in the early 20th century.
