After the Bombing
Dresden After the Bombing (March 1945)
Germany
Germany › Saxony › Dresden
This powerful photograph shows the devastated city of Dresden, Germany, in March 1945, shortly after the massive Allied bombing raids that took place between February 13 and 15, 1945, during the final months of World War II.
From this elevated viewpoint, the scale of destruction is overwhelming. Entire city blocks lie in ruins, with little more than skeletal walls and collapsed buildings stretching across the landscape. Only a few damaged structures still stand amid the sea of rubble. Streets that once formed part of one of Europe’s most beautiful historic cities now cut through vast fields of destruction.
Before the war, Dresden was often called “Florence on the Elbe” because of its extraordinary baroque architecture, cultural institutions, and artistic heritage. The bombing raids and the firestorm that followed destroyed large parts of the historic center and caused immense civilian suffering.
Photographs like this remain stark visual reminders of the human and cultural cost of modern warfare. Much of Dresden would later be rebuilt in the decades after the war, though the scars of those events remain deeply embedded in the city’s history.
