Entierro de Abraham González
Awaiting the remains of the revolutionary governor Abraham González
Chihuahua, Mexico — February 1914 🇲🇽📜
This powerful photograph captures a large crowd gathered in the city of Chihuahua waiting for the arrival of the remains of the maderista revolutionary governor Abraham González.
González had been one of the most loyal political allies of Francisco I. Madero and played a key role in the early stages of the Mexican Revolution. After the overthrow and assassination of Madero during the Ten Tragic Days in 1913, the new regime led by Victoriano Huerta began persecuting prominent revolutionary leaders.
In March 1913, Abraham González was arrested, imprisoned, and ultimately murdered under orders of the Huerta regime, his death officially reported as an attempted escape.
Nearly a year later, after constitutionalist forces regained control of Chihuahua, his remains were recovered and brought to the city so that the population could pay their respects and give him a dignified burial.
The image vividly shows the atmosphere of the moment: hundreds of citizens gathered near the bridge, horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles filling the scene, and a dense crowd waiting solemnly to honor a man who had become a symbol of the revolutionary cause.
