Student driver in Budapest
📍 Budapest, Hungary
📅 February 23, 1963
A young learner driver sits behind the wheel of a Moskvich 403, a Soviet-made car widely used across Eastern Europe during the 1960s. The vehicle belonged to the Automobile Transport Training Institute of the Ministry of Transport and Postal Affairs (KPM), which was responsible for driver education in Hungary during the socialist era.
The inscription on the door reads “KPM Autóközlekedési Tanintézete” (Automobile Transport Training Institute), marking it as an official training car. Scenes like this were common in Budapest at the time, when motorization was slowly expanding and state institutions organized most driving instruction.
Photographs such as this capture everyday life in Cold War–era Hungary, when learning to drive a car like the Moskvich represented both modern mobility and the growing presence of automobiles in Eastern European cities.
