Incorporated just five years earlier, in 1904, Alice faced a devastating trial when a fire swept through its commercial heart, destroying an estimated half of the town. The image captures both loss and resilience: scattered debris, blackened walls, and townspeople already at work amid the ruins.

Despite the scale of destruction, Alice did not falter. Like many communities of the American frontier era, it rebuilt بسرعة and with determination. Within just two years, in 1911, Alice’s rapid recovery and growing importance led to its designation as the county seat of the newly established Jim Wells County.
