Iwan Bunin A Difficult Moment in Life

1901

The reason for breaking off friendly relations between Chekhov and Bunin was a letter that Bunin wrote to Chekhov “in a difficult moment of life” — a long, eight-page letter in tidy handwriting, where Bunin poured his heart out to the fullest: he wrote about his depression, the loss of the meaning of life, about the creative crisis and stagnation, about what he considered to be the countrys bitter fate, insomnia and headaches. about hopelessness and suicidal thoughts.
In response, Chekhov retracted his telegram from the post office: “And you, my friend Ivan Alekseich, drink less vodka.”
They didnt talk anymore..)
