Sears Tower
In 1974, the Sears Tower officially opened as the tallest building in the world, standing at 1,450 feet. Designed by architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan, the tower’s bundled-tube design was revolutionary, allowing for both height and stability. The skyscraper housed the headquarters of Sears, Roebuck & Co., then the largest retailer in the world. Its observation deck quickly became a must-visit attraction, offering breathtaking views of Chicago and beyond. The completion of the Sears Tower symbolized Chicago’s continued role as a leader in modern architecture and urban development.
