Charles Dickens

1867

Charles Dickens (1812–1870) was an English writer and social critic, widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian era. His works are characterized by his keen observations of society, a vivid portrayal of characters, and a strong sense of social justice. Dickens's novels often dealt with the struggles of the poor and working-class, highlighting issues such as poverty, child labor, and social inequality.

Born in Portsmouth, England, Dickens experienced hardship early in life, particularly during his childhood, when his father was imprisoned for debt. This experience profoundly influenced his later writing, as he often depicted characters who faced financial difficulties and the harsh realities of life.

Some of Dickens's most famous works include *Oliver Twist* (1837–1839), which tells the story of an orphan boy's struggles in Victorian London, *A Christmas Carol* (1843), which remains a beloved holiday classic, *David Copperfield* (1849–1850), a semi-autobiographical novel, and *Great Expectations* (1860–1861), a coming-of-age story that critiques the class system.

Dickens was also a passionate reformer who used his writing to address societal problems. His works often conveyed a moral message, encouraging readers to be compassionate and to consider the needs of others, particularly the less fortunate. Beyond his novels, Dickens wrote essays, short stories, and works for periodicals, where he highlighted issues such as child labor, the inadequacy of the education system, and the need for social reform.

Dickens’s impact on literature and society remains profound, as his works continue to be studied, adapted, and enjoyed by readers around the world. His skillful storytelling, memorable characters, and social conscience have made him a timeless figure in world literature.
