Undershaw House, Hindhead – Circa 1900
With Mary and Kingsley Conan Doyle on the drive

Step back in time to the turn of the 20th century with this rare photograph of Undershaw, the beloved country home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, nestled in the peaceful hills of Hindhead, Surrey. Built in the late 1890s, this red-brick Arts and Crafts residence was designed to provide fresh air and comfort for Conan Doyle’s ailing wife, Louise.

In the image, we see Mary and Kingsley, two of the author's children, on the driveway that winds its way past the impressive façade of the house. It was here that Conan Doyle penned some of his most famous Sherlock Holmes stories, including The Hound of the Baskervilles.

This historic photo captures not only a moment of family life but also a piece of British literary heritage. The rural charm, unpaved road, and timeless architecture evoke a lost Edwardian world, rich with history and character.
