Adiyama was formerly known as Hasanmsur.
It is located in the territory of the former Armenian kingdom of Kommagene. Later it was a city in Western Armenia, in the Hasanmsur province of Kharberdi village, on the right side of Euphrates. The city was the center of Hasanmsur province.
At the end of the 19th century it had 15,000 inhabitants, 6,000 of whom were Armenians, others Turks, Greeks and Assyrians. The inhabitants mainly cultivated tobacco, cotton, hashish.
In the vicinity of Adiyaman there were Armenian villages: Samsat, Gandara, Kevruk. During the Hamid massacres of 1895 and the Cilicia massacres of 1909, the Armenians of Adiyaman and the surrounding area heroically resisted Turkish gunfire. During the Great Genocide, part of the Armenians were exterminated.
After the Genocide massacres of 1915, Armenians settled again in Adiyaman.
In 1971, 52 Armenian families lived in Adiyaman.
French Resistance Movement Hero Misak Manushyan was born in Adiyaman
