Dam Square, Amsterdam

📍 Amsterdam, Netherlands — June 15, 1963

This photograph captures a symbolic moment during a humanitarian campaign held in Dam Square, Amsterdam, to support the rebuilding of the Persian village of Dousadj.

In the image, Alderman J. Tabak ceremonially places the first brick, marking the start of the initiative known as “Actie Herbouw Perzisch Dorp Dousadj” (“Action to Rebuild the Persian Village of Dousadj”). The event was part of a public fundraising effort intended to help reconstruct the village after it had been destroyed by an earthquake in Iran.

The ceremony, attended by officials and citizens, aimed to raise awareness and solidarity for the affected community. Such public campaigns were common in the 1960s, when European cities often organized symbolic events to support international humanitarian causes.
