The Shirak Canal is the first irrigation canal in Armenia.
It starts on the left bank of the Akhuryan River near the village of Kaps.
It was built between 1922 and 1925. The opening took place on June 21, 1925, with a great ceremony, which was also attended by the great friend of the Armenian people F. Nansen, who also wrote about it in his book “The Deceived People”.
The length of the irrigation system is 46.3 km, the main canal is 21.3 km (2.6 km tunnel). The water permeability in the head is 6,6 m3/s. Irrigates about 9.8 thousand ha (formerly 11 thousand ha) of land in Shirak region. There are a number of structures on the canal, and at the end of the tunnel is the Gyumri hydroelectric power plant.
