The Great War

The name World War I appeared in historiography only after the outbreak of World War II in 1939. During the interwar period, the names “Great War” and “Great War” were used. In Russia, it was often called the “Second World War” and the “German War”, and after the Bolsheviks came to power, it was often called the “imperialist war”. The name “European War” was often used in the United States, and it was only after the US entered the conflict that the name “World War” began to appear in the press.

The photo shows a girl playing with a doll next to the equipment of a soldier (possibly her father) on a street in Reims, France, 1917. The photo was taken by French Army photographer Fernand Cuville.

We previously published notes The Christmas Truce of 1914 and the Colored First World War.
