Robert E. Lee, around age 38, and his son William Henry Fitzhugh Lee

1845

Robert E. Lee, around the age of 38, was a dedicated officer in the United States Army, known for his engineering skills and disciplined leadership. Born in 1807 in Virginia, he graduated from West Point with top honors and quickly built a reputation as a capable and honorable soldier. By the late 1840s, he had distinguished himself in the Mexican-American War, serving under General Winfield Scott and earning recognition for his bravery and strategic mind.

During this period, Lee was also a devoted family man. His son, William Henry Fitzhugh Lee, known as “Rooney,” was born in 1837 and was growing up in a household deeply rooted in Virginia’s traditions. Rooney followed in his father’s footsteps, attending Harvard for a time before embracing a military career.

At this stage in his life, Robert E. Lee was stationed at various military posts, including service as superintendent of West Point. Though his future fame would come during the Civil War, in his late 30s, he was a respected but relatively unknown officer, admired for his discipline and strong sense of duty.
