The Beatles and The Lord of the Rings collaboration idea
The Beatles and The Lord of the Rings
John Lennon was a big fan of John Tolkiens work and in the late 1960s he had the idea to film the novel The Lord of the Rings. Lennon wanted to see Stanley Kubrick behind the directors chair, and the bands musicians were to play the main roles. Lennon was supposed to be Gollum, Paul McCartney would be Frodo, his companion Sam would be Ringo Starr, and George Harrison could play Gandalf. In addition, the Beatles planned to write several songs specifically for the film.
Both Kubrick, who did not understand how to portray such a novel on screen, and Tolkien, who was annoyed by his teenage neighbors who imitated The Beatles, rejected the idea.
The public found out about the canceled film only three decades later: in 2002, Paul McCartney told the story to Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
