Notting Hill, North Kensington

1906

This delightful photograph, taken around 1906, captures two young women strolling through Notting Hill, North Kensington — their laughter frozen in time. Dressed in winter coats, elegant shoes and wide-brimmed hats, they carry books and schoolbags, perhaps fresh from a day of lessons or heading to one of the nearby colleges or finishing schools that flourished in the area.

Behind them, the sign “Malvern House” suggests a residential building typical of Edwardian London — elegant yet practical, with stuccoed facades and wrought iron gates. The atmosphere speaks of a changing London: education becoming more accessible to women, and the streets of Kensington alive with youthful ambition and charm.

In 1906, while these young ladies studied and walked, the British Parliament passed the Education (Provision of Meals) Act, beginning the school meals programme — a small but meaningful step in social reform.
