HMS Foudroyant

1897

HMS Foudroyant, which served as Nelson’s flagship in the Mediterranean Squadron, had been touring English seaside resorts as an attraction when it was wrecked off Blackpool Sands on June 16, 1897.

The devastation was nearly complete, but with the approaching Trafalgar centenary and the prospect of crafting memorabilia from its historic timbers and copper, a group of Manchester antique and furniture dealers formed a consortium and acquired the salvage for £250.
