🇬🇧 United Kingdom › England › Wiltshire › Stonehenge
🗓️ 1875

This remarkable photograph, believed to date from 1875, is considered one of the earliest known photographs of Stonehenge.

The image shows a horse-drawn carriage parked beside the prehistoric monument, with three individuals seated and standing nearby. According to family records, the people in the photograph are Isabel, Maud, and Robert Routh, whose descendants later shared the image with English Heritage.

Scenes like this remind us that long before modern tourism, visitors were already traveling to Stonehenge by carriage to admire the ancient stones that have stood for more than 4,000 years.

Today the monument is carefully protected, but photographs like this capture a time when visitors could approach the stones much more freely.

🕰️ A rare glimpse of Victorian visitors meeting prehistoric Britain.
