ST. IGNATIUS CHURCH

1930

St. Ignatius Church is a historic and iconic landmark located on the campus of the University of San Francisco (USF). The church is affiliated with the Catholic Church and is staffed by priests of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It is dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order.

The current St. Ignatius Church is the fifth such church to be built in San Francisco. Its history dates back to 1855 when the first St. Ignatius Church was constructed as a small wood-frame building beside a schoolhouse that later became St. Ignatius Academy, the predecessor of USF. Over the years, the church has been rebuilt multiple times due to various reasons, including the 1906 earthquake and fire.

The present church, completed in 1914, features Italian Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles. It is known for its stunning interior, beautiful stained glass windows, and impressive façade. The church serves as both a parish for the local community and a chapel for the university.

St. Ignatius Church is not only a place of worship but also a center for various community activities, events, and services. It continues to be a significant spiritual and cultural hub in San Francisco.
