In 1974, the Sears Tower officially opened as the tallest building in the world, standing at 1,450 feet. Designed by architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan, the tower’s bundled-tube design was revolutionary, allowing for both height and stability. The skyscraper housed the headquarters of Sears, Roebuck & Co., then the largest retailer in the world.
