Throgmorton St

This striking photograph, taken from an upper-storey window around 1921, plunges us into the hustle and bustle of Throgmorton Street, one of the key arteries of the financial world in early 20th-century London. Located in the City of London, just a stone’s throw from the Bank of England and the Royal Exchange, Throgmorton Street pulsed with the energy of brokers, clerks, and bankers moving between offices and the nearby London Stock Exchange, which had stood here since 1801.

The narrowness of the street and the grandeur of its neoclassical façades—rows of columns and sculpted cornices—reflect both the density and prestige of the financial institutions that defined this district. In this photo, bowler-hatted gentlemen and umbrella-bearing crowds navigate the street on foot—cars were rare here, as the City remained a pedestrianised domain during office hours.

Signs like “First Floor Offices To Let” remind us that this was a place of constant commercial activity, where fortunes were made (and lost) with the rise and fall of markets. It was a space not just of commerce, but of ambition, competition, and social transformation.
