Zoravar Andranik with his wedding participants
Zoravar Andran (also known as **Andranik Torosyan** or **General Andranik**; 1865–1927) was an Armenian military commander and national hero who played a significant role in the Armenian struggle for independence and during the Armenian Genocide. He was known for his leadership in defending Armenian communities against both Ottoman and Turkish forces.
Born in the region of Western Armenia (modern-day Turkey), Andranik was deeply involved in political and military efforts aimed at securing Armenian autonomy. He was an active participant in the **Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF)** and was a key figure in organizing and leading armed resistance against Ottoman rule.
During the **Armenian Genocide** (1915–1917), Andranik fought to protect the Armenian population from the Turkish forces, leading several successful battles to defend Armenian villages and populations. He earned his title "Zoravar," meaning "General," due to his military prowess and leadership.
Andranik continued to be a prominent figure in the fight for Armenian independence, even after the collapse of the Russian Empire and the formation of the Republic of Turkey. After World War I, he led military campaigns in the Caucasus and fought in battles to secure the survival of Armenians in the face of continuing threats. However, after the defeat of the Armenian forces and the establishment of the Soviet Union, Andranik went into exile.
Andranik's legacy as a military leader and national hero endures in Armenia, where he is remembered for his efforts to protect the Armenian people during one of the darkest periods in their history.
