In August 1939, Albert Einstein signed a letter to President Roosevelt, written by his colleague Leo Silard, warning the White House that German physicists recent discoveries in the field of uranium fission could lead to the creation of an atomic bomb in Germany. It was this letter that laid the foundation for the top-secret Manhattan Project, which the US government appointed Robert Oppenheimer to lead in 1942.
According to several sources, 64-year-old Einstein was not hired to work at the Manhattan Project because of the scientists German origin and his left-wing views. However, differences in views on theoretical physics with the project chapter also had an impact. According to the authors of the biographical book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” (on which Christopher Nolans famous film is based), the American physicist considered Einstein “not a working scientist, but a living patron saint of physics.”
