Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) was an Austrian composer and conductor, widely regarded as one of the leading symphonists of the late Romantic era. Born in Bohemia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), he showed prodigious musical talent from an early age and studied at the Vienna Conservatory.

Mahler gained prominence as a conductor, leading major opera houses, including the Vienna Court Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Despite his demanding career, he composed a series of monumental symphonies and orchestral song cycles, blending deep emotional intensity with innovative orchestration.

His music, initially met with mixed reactions, profoundly influenced 20th-century composers. His later years were marked by personal tragedy and illness, and he died in 1911 at the age of 50. Today, Mahler's symphonies are celebrated as masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire.
