Devil Anse Hatfield and Levisa

This poignant photograph captures Devil Anse Hatfield and his wife, Levisa (Levicy), just after tending to the Hatfield Family Cemetery at dusk. They had been caring for the graves of their sons, Troy and Elias, possibly around the time the marble headstones were first placed at the mountaintop site in Sarah Ann, WV.

In 1911, Troy and Elias were tragically killed in a deadly shootout with Octavio Jerome, a rival Italian liquor distributor, near Boomer, WV. All three men perished in the gunfire.

The Hatfields were no strangers to violence and loss, but for Anse and Levicy, burying their sons was an unimaginable sorrow.
