Young Man from Wealthy Family in Bukhara Emirate

Jew. 1880-1890s.

Bukhara Emirate, Moscow Bukhara.

A young man wearing a belted jacket and light-colored outerwear (chakman); the top of his fur hat is covered with patterned fabric. The suit, made of expensive fabrics and fur, reflects that the young man comes from a wealthy family. The main distinguishing element in the costume of Bukhara Jews were hats: fur hats covered with fabric, or hats with a fur trim. The turban, the most common headdress for the urban Muslim population of Central Asia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, was forbidden to be worn by gentiles.
