A view of Bagesh in the early 19th century
Beatlis (Bagesh) early 19th century. 18 km south-west of Lake Vana in the province of Mets Hayk Aghdznik.
Until 1915 there were 4 Armenian churches and 4 monasteries in the city (according to the 4 sides and dioceses of the city), which had extensive farmhouses, andastanas and gardens. According to Archbishop Maghakya Ormanyan, in the early 1900s there were 80 densely populated Armenian settlements in the Episcopal district of Baghesh. Of the Armenian population, 50,000 belonged to the Apostolic Church, five hundred to Catholic, and a thousand to Protestant congregations.
