Monastery of the Holy Virgin of Arabkir 1898-1900
It was a 13th century Armenian monastery complex in the historical Tsopk province. It was built in 1249. One of the largest churches in Western Armenia. The monastery could accommodate 3000 people. The cathedral was attacked, looted and burned down in 1915 during the Genocide. Later, the Cathedral was renovated and used as a school. In 1950, the municipality of Arapkir decided to demolish the temple. On September 18, 1957, the temple was blown up with dynamite and then the fragment where the church is located was sold to a peasant named Hussein for 28005 lire. Until now, the remains of the church are preserved in the area.
