Vito Corleone and the Apaches
Vito Corleone and the Apaches
March 27, 1973, 45, the Oscars take place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles, USA. Marlon Brando should win the Best Actor statuette for his role as Vito Corleone in The Godfather. But Brando did not attend the ceremony; instead, actress and public activist Maria Luisa Cruz appeared on stage as Sashas “Little Pen”, a young Indian woman. She went to the microphone and addressed the audience and said: “Marlon regrets not being able to be here, but he is refusing the award because of the terrible treatment of Native Americans in the United States.” She prepared an eight-page speech but was given only one minute. Sashin introduced herself as an Apache girl and criticized Hollywoods norms for portraying Native Americans.
