Bagaran, St. Shushanik church in 1902 Photographer: Aram Vruyr Link: vanker.org

Shushana Monastery, in the Arsharunik province of the Great Hayk Ayrat world, near the village of Bagaran, not far from the Akhuryan estuary, on its left bank, opposite the monastery of St. Theodoros. It was probably built during the reign of Saparapet Ashot Shapuhyan in 914-918. According to tradition, one day the infant daughter of an Armenian prince goes astray and cannot be found, and the Armenian prince decides to build a church in memory of his daughter. There is also another story: In Bagaran there was a woman whose name was Shushana, this woman is late every time for the Holy Liturgy, and decides to build a new church and names it Shushana Monastery. Today the church is on the verge of collapse.
