Haile Selassie I — Emperor of Ethiopia (1892–1975)

This vintage photograph captures a moment of international diplomacy involving Haile Selassie I, the long-reigning Emperor of Ethiopia and one of the most iconic leaders of the 20th century. Revered as a symbol of African unity and independence, Haile Selassie led Ethiopia through a period of modernization while defending its sovereignty during the Italian invasion of the 1930s.

His leadership inspired movements far beyond Africa — most notably the Rastafari movement, which venerates him as a messianic figure. Dignified and visionary, Selassie became a global advocate for peace, freedom, and human rights, addressing the League of Nations in 1936 and later the United Nations as a champion of African liberation.
