The flooded Lake Street

1890

Captured in the late 19th century, this remarkable image shows Lake Street in Oxford submerged under floodwaters in 1890. Life, however, carried on—residents stood calmly at their gates, children watched the rising waters with curiosity, and horse-drawn carts continued to roll through the street like boats navigating a canal.

Flooding was not uncommon in Oxford, a city crisscrossed by the Thames and Cherwell rivers. Events like this highlighted the fragile balance between urban expansion and natural waterways in Victorian England.

To the right, the sign for The Crown Stores pub is still visible, a reminder that community spaces endured through hardship. Despite the inconvenience, the atmosphere captured here is almost serene—a timeless moment where nature briefly reclaimed the town.
