Atlantic City's Boardwalk
Atlantic City and wooden boardwalk
The first wooden promenade in the United States, the Boardwalk (Boardwalk in English), was built in Atlantic City, New Jersey, back in 1870. Boardwalk was built between hotels and entertainment venues because hotel owners complained that guests brought sand from the beach on their shoes. In the early years, the boards were removed for the winter, and only in 1880 did a permanent promenade appear. It was washed away by a hurricane in 1889 and rebuilt for the following beach season.
In the photo, Atlantic Citys main street is a wooden beach promenade, presumably from the 1890s or 1900s.
