It was founded in the 2nd quarter of the 10th century, during the reign of the Armenian king Abbas Bagratuni (929—953).
The founders were the Armenian monks who fled Byzantium and took refuge in Armenia under the leadership of the Andranic monastery John (hence the name of the Horomner Monastery).
