Demonstration in Munich during World War I

1932

Nazi photoshop

On the eve of the German presidential elections in 1932, political opponents accused Adolf Hitler of unpatriotism - it became known that he evaded service in the Austro-Hungarian army in 1908. In response, the Nazis released a photo by photographer Heinrich Hoffman taken at a demonstration in Munich in August 1914, where people gathered in the square were speaking out in support of the war against Great Britain and France. The photo in the crowd shows the face of a man who looks a lot like Hitler. The Nazis used this photo as proof of Hitlers “national” origin and patriotism. After that, the photo was used in numerous publications about the dictator - articles, biographies and even school textbooks.
But German historian Gerd Krümeich found in the Hoffman archives another photo from a Munich demonstration showing the hair of a man later identified as Hitler looking completely different. The historian later found several photographs of those events taken by other people from different angles - none of them showed anyone like Hitler.

Earlier in Old Photos: “I volunteered for the front, was seriously wounded, went blind...”, Different Hitler.
