Comanche Chief Quanah Parker with Two of His Wives – 1898

This solemn and powerful portrait was taken in Chickasha, Oklahoma, in 1898. At the center stands Quanah Parker, the last chief of the Comanche and a pivotal figure in the transition from the free life of the Plains to life on reservations. On either side of him are two of his wives, both dressed in traditional garments adorned with intricate patterns and fringes.

Quanah Parker was born to a Comanche chief and an Anglo-American woman, Cynthia Ann Parker, who had been captured as a child and assimilated into Comanche life. Quanah would become a respected warrior, diplomat, and later, an advocate for Native sovereignty, land rights, and adaptation to American society without cultural erasure.

This rare photograph captures not only his stoic presence, but also the resilience and dignity of Native identity during a time of immense upheaval.
