The bridge was built at the end of the 12th century by the sister of Ivan and Zakare Zakarian, Queen Vanen, in memory of her husband Abbas Bagratun.
In 1795, the gunmen of Agha Mohammed Khan destroyed the part of the bridges protocol cross stone on which the year of construction was written.
It has been repaired several times. In 1888, Norashen S. of Tiflis. The broken foundations of the left side walls of the bridge were strengthened with the help of Sanahin priest Yervandenz Tadevos from Sanahin Church.
In 1928-1929, under the leadership of Alexander Tamanyan, the foundations of the left wing were partially strengthened.
In the years 1939-1940 and 1976-1977, reconstruction of the facade walls was carried out.
