Robert Cornelius was an American photographer and pioneer in the history of photography. He took the first known self-portrait in the United States in 1839, using a camera he built himself. He also operated some of the earliest photography studios in the country and invented a solar lamp that used cheaper fuel. He died in 1893 at the age of 84
