Russian Paramedics Wearing Prokofiev Masks, World War I
Russian paramedics. World War I, 1914. They are wearing a Prokofiev mask (“stigma mask”). It was made from 30 layers of fabric impregnated with a gas mask: water, glycerin, potash, hyposulfite and urotropin. To protect the organs of vision, the mask had glass glasses hermetically inserted into the metal frame. Prokofievs mask could absorb up to 1 g of phosgene. Gas masks will appear only in 1916.
