Bienville Square,
Mobile, Alabama — Bienville Square, 1880s
Children play near the fountain in Bienville Square, in downtown Mobile, Alabama, during the 1880s. The park, shaded by large oak trees and surrounded by elegant buildings, had already become one of the city’s most beloved public spaces.
Bienville Square was laid out in 1824 and named after Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the French colonial founder of Mobile and New Orleans. Throughout the 19th century it served as a central gathering place where residents met, rested, and enjoyed the shade during the hot Gulf Coast afternoons. The ornate fountain at the center, visible in this photograph, became one of the square’s most recognizable landmarks.
Scenes like this offer a glimpse of everyday life in the American South more than a century ago—children playing, families strolling, and neighbors gathering in the heart of the city.
